Why Every PR Team Should Be Paying Attention to Reddit

For years, Reddit was treated as the internet’s wild west – a place where brands feared criticism, and PR professionals hesitated to engage.

With more than 100 million daily users, Reddit has become one of the web’s most influential communities for product recommendations, brand reputation, and purchase decisions. Its conversations are also increasingly powering AI search results and appearing prominently in Google rankings, making it impossible for PR professionals to ignore.

Unlike curated social feeds, Reddit is built around anonymous, interest-based communities. People ask candid questions, share honest reviews, and debate about products without worrying about their personal brand. That honesty makes Reddit one of the most valuable sources of consumer insight available today.

For PR and communications teams, these conversations provide far more than social chatter. They reveal how consumers actually talk about brands, where messaging resonates (or misses the mark), what pain points exist, and which topics are beginning to gain momentum. These insights can strengthen everything from campaign planning and media messaging to product positioning and executive thought leadership.

Reddit is also an early indicator of cultural shifts. Communities frequently identify emerging trends, unmet consumer needs, and brand frustrations long before they make headlines. By monitoring relevant subreddits, brands can uncover opportunities for proactive storytelling, identify issues before they escalate, and develop communications strategies grounded in real audience conversations.

A great example is United Airlines, which turned a Reddit post into a powerful brand moment. After a father shared that his son had lost his prized Pokémon card binder while travelling, the story quickly gained traction on Reddit. Rather than letting the conversation unfold on its own, the United team rallied together, donating thousands of Pokémon cards to surprise him and replace what he’d lost. The heartfelt gesture generated widespread positive media coverage and reinforced United’s commitment to customer care.

Brands that actively listen (and respond thoughtfully when appropriate!) will be better equipped to build trust, spot opportunities, and create communications strategies that resonate with the audiences who matter most.
